Kushmanda: The Cosmic and Divine Goddess for Fasting Sciencing
Introduction: Who is Goddess Kushmanda?
On the fourth day of Navratras, we worship Goddess Kushmanda, the creator of the universe. Her name is derived from:
• Ku (little)
• Ushma (warmth or energy)
• Anda (cosmic egg)
Which
means that she is the divine energy that has given birth to the cosmos
by her radiant smile-she brought light and life into existence. Dark was
the creation before Kushmanda.
She is considered to be a source
of energy in everything, including the Sun; hence she is called Adi
Shakti (the primordial power). Worshipping her renders strength, health,
and clarity of mind.
Iconography & Meaning
Goddess Kushmanda is depicted as:
• Seated on Lion-Representing Power and Command over cosmic forces.
• Eight Hands holding Weapons, a Rosary, and a Pot of Nectar-indicating
control over Creation, Knowledge, and Divine Blessings.
• A Glowing Aura- Signifying her role as the source of all light and energy.
• Holding a Kalash (pitcher) filled with Amrit (nectar of immortality)-Symbolizing Divine Nutriments and Well-Being.
Her
form teaches us that energy, creativity, and nourishment come from
divine will and that true strength lies in inner vitality.
Spiritual Teachings from Kushmanda
Positive beginnings in creation- just like that, with an upturned
smile, Kushmanda creates light; likewise, a positive attitude inspires a
vibrant life.
Harness your inner energy-Energy fuels the
universe, and so do we ourselves. Self-disciplines and healthy practices
hold our strength.
Balance Power and Nourishment Just as the
Kalash of nectar, we should keep our well-being spiritually, mentally,
and physically filled.
Thus, meditating on Kushmanda brings health, vitality, and divine wisdom into one's life.
Scientific Reasoning Behind Fasting on the Fourth Day of Navaratri
Since
Kushmanda is associated with energy and vitality, the fasting practices
of this day reflect rejuvenation of the body and mind.
1 Boost
Immunity and Vitality 2-3 being the third-fourth day of fasting induces
the body to produce white blood cells to strengthen the immune system.
Thus, even here,
Kushmanda is the giver of life and nourishment.
2 Improved Digestion and Nutrient Absorption
Fasting
resets the digestive system, thereby improving nutrient absorption and
helping conserve energy, thus aligning with Kushmanda's solar energy.
3 Increases Energy Flow (Pranic Shakti)
This
day refers to the Anahata Chakra (Heart Chakra) which rules love,
vitality, and emotional well-being. Eating greens, dairy, and nuts
strengthens this chakra, promoting emotional balance and energy flow.
4 Sun Energy Alignment
Kushmanda
governs the solar body, so eating solar energy-rich foods such as
pumpkin, jaggery, and fruits helps replenish solar energy in the
body-the warmth and strength remain.
Rituals & Worship on Day 4
• Wake up early, take a bath, and wear orange clothes (expressing energy and radiance).
• Offer pumpkin, curd, honey, and green vegetables to the goddess.
• Recite the mantra:
ॐ देवी कूष्माण्डायै नमः (Om Devi Kushmandayai Namah)
• Meditation on cosmic energy and inner strength.
• Leading a sattvic diet with an emphasis on foods that give strength and nourishment:

of Navratri, it's a reminder to worship her because it fills our lives
